Opening Panel: What Do Our Kids Need Most Now?

Linda Ryden is the creator of the Peace of Mind Program and author of the Peace of Mind Curriculum Series, a cutting-edge combination of mindfulness-based social-emotional learning, conflict resolution and social justice for Early Childhood through Middle School. Linda has served as the full-time Peace Teacher at Lafayette Elementary School, Washington DC’s largest public elementary, since 2003 and continues to teach Peace of Mind classes to more than 700 students every week. Sophia is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker supporting Grades 4, 5 and SLS at Lafayette Elementary School in Washington D.C. where she serves as School Behavioral Health Coordinator. We are so glad Sophia is joining us to share her observations, insight and experience with us!

Julia, a first grade teacher at Morrison Elementary School in Philadelphia. Jjlia is part of a team of educators teaching Peace of Mind in her classroom this year. We’re thrilled to have her join us!

Jackie Snowden is a retired educator whose long career included roles as a classroom teacher, Arts Integration Specialist, and Assistant Principal at Lafayette Elementary School in Washington, DC. Jackie is a former Board Member and current advisor to Peace of Mind (POM) and current full time grandmother. As former staff member at Lafayette ES, where Peace of Mind began, she was privileged to witness, utilize, and appreciate the positive change it made in the behavior and performance of the student body and staff. As a teacher, Jackie was nominated for the Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher Award. She holds degrees from American University and Cambridge College. She is very proud native Washingtonian, and the even more proud mother of three adult children, all of whom are Lafayette graduates and owners of successful businesses. She has been blissfully married to her husband Rene for over 40 years.

For the past twenty years, Jordan Love has worked in independent schools in Washington, D.C., and Maryland as an early childhood educator and school leader. He is currently the Co-Head of Lower School at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, guiding programming, curriculum implementation, and professional development in preschool through kindergarten. In 2017, St. Andrew’s Lower School adopted the Peace of Mind curriculum in all PK-Grade 2 homeroom classes, and the program has since become one of the cornerstones of the social-emotional curriculum in the division… read more

Mission Moments

Liz Whisnant has served as principal of the District of Columbia Public Schools’ Horace Mann ES since 2005. Horace Mann is only one of four schools in the nation to receive the US Department of Education Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award five times. In 2008, Liz co-founded with several principal colleagues the District of Columbia Collaborative for Change (DC3), a reform structure for school improvement in DCPS whose mission is to craft schools that are inspiring places to teach and learn. She currently serves on several boards, including The National Network of Schools in Partnership, The Theatre Lab, and Peace of Mind. Prior to Mann, Liz served as a school leader in Charlotte, NC and as a principal coach for the University of Washington’s Center for Educational Leadership in Seattle. She launched her education career as a classroom teacher in Boston, MA. Liz holds degrees from Harvard University, Lesley University, the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, and Georgetown University. She is a proud mother, lucky spouse, and an enthusiastic cook.

I am Margarita Robledo. I come from Bogota Colombia. I have more than 20 years of experience teaching in International IB Elementary schools. Before working at Stokes I was teaching at a public school in Chapel Hill NC, Frank Porter Graham. I firmly believe in the importance, especially in these times, of teaching students new curricula such as Peace of Mind to learn to manage their feelings and feel connected and calmer with the world around them.

Syreetta McArthur is an elementary educator at Lafayette Elementary School. She graduated from the University of Maryland University College with a Bachelor of Science in English and is currently working on a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction Social Justice. A career changer, Syreetta worked as a paraprofessional, attendance counselor and registrar before serving as a 4th grade and ELL teacher in her first year. These experiences greatly influence her practice and provides her with the perspective needed to connect with students and families throughout Washington, DC. Syreetta believes that her third-grade students speak, act and move as mindfully as they do because of what they’ve learned through the Peace of Mind curriculum.

Christina is a Kindergarten teacher at Morrison Elementary School in Philadelphia, part of a cohort of educators at her school implementing Peace of Mind this year. We are so thrilled to include her perspective in our conversation!

Ben is a 4th grade teacher at Elsie Whitlow Stokes Community Freedom Public Charter School in Washington D.C. He has worked in schools in a range of positions and grades for the past 17 years and finds great joy in establishing learning environments that are inclusive, productive and uplifting. He was first introduced to Peace of Mind 4 years ago and works with colleagues to incorporate the program into daily and weekly morning meeting routines.

Jane Wilkins is the mother of three children (grades 5, 3, and prekindergarten) at Lafayette Elementary School in Washington, DC. She holds a masters degree in economics from Fordham University in NYC and works on international trade finance at the US Department of Agriculture.
Student Speakers

Iris is in 5th grade at Lafayette Elementary School in Washington, DC where she is a Mindful Mentor, participates in Math Club, and plays on the school basketball team. Iris is the oldest of 3 sisters.

Nick is a 5th grade student at Lafayette Elementary in Washington D.C. where he is a Mindful Mentor. Nick is also a member of Lafayette’s social justice club and plays on the school basketball team. He has two older siblings.

Kirsten Ivey-Colson, co-founder of The AntiRacist Table, is an attorney and a student of nonviolence communication (NVC), right speech, conflict resolution, and meditation. Her undergraduate degree is in African American Studies and English, and in addition to her JD, she holds an LLM in Alternative Dispute Resolution.

Lynn Turner (she/her) is a native Washingtonian, wife, and mother of two children and the proud descendant of enslaved people. She is a culturally responsive educator who is passionate about teaching young children and supporting families, work that she has done for over ten years. Lynn currently serves on the Waldorf Early Childhood Association of North America’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access Committee as the committee co-chair. She is an adjunct professor at Mount Mary University and Great Lakes Waldorf Institute in their Waldorf Teacher Training Program. Lynn holds a BA in Fine Arts from Sweet Briar College and an MAT in Early Childhood Education from Washington Trinity University and received her Waldorf Early Childhood Teaching Certificate in 2017. Lynn has also been published in Gateways Magazine and has been a workshop presenter for diversity, equity and inclusion at the 2021 Waldorf Early Childhood Education Association of Northern America Teacher Conference.

Chapin is a communications professional with more than a decade of experience leading strategic communications efforts, planning, and integrated campaigns for foundations, associations, Fortune 50 companies, and non-profits. As a Deputy Director at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Chapin leads communications across the foundation’s United States Program, which includes strategies in Early Learning, K-12 Education, Postsecondary Success, Data, Educational Pathways, and Economic Mobility & Opportunity. Chapin is also a long-time meditator and has been trained via the Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification Program (MMTCP) through Sounds True. He began his relationship with Peace of Mind after his two daughters started using PoM practices at home to solve conflicts between them and he has been a proud advocate and board member ever since.
Mindfulness and Support for Educators

Kelly Gilstrap is a career educator with over 14 years of experience both teaching and serving as an instructional coach. As a mindful educator, Kelly believes in the power of school communities to develop student capacity to face challenges in their lives and the world with kindness, courage, and compassion. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s in Educational Administration. After recently teaching and coaching in Washington, DC, she now serves as a consultant with Peace of Mind, providing training and educator support. In this role, she develops and delivers training for those new to PoM and schools looking to strengthen their implementation model. Kelly now resides in the sunny state of Georgia with her children and her husband Neil Gilstrap, Co-founder and CTO of Cadmore Media.

Dave is a certified mindfulness teacher, circle-facilitator, and restorative justice educator who has dedicated his life to creating communities where people can authentically share, learn, and grow together. With 20 years of experience with mindfulness and mind-body practices, Dave is an outspoken champion for racial justice, gender equality, and LGBTQ & immigrant rights. Dave is the co-creator and co-facilitator of Peace of Mind’s Virtual Community Circles for educators, and a Peace of Mind Advisor.

Dr. Elizabeth Hoffman, a Peace of Mind Board Member, is a Scientific Program Manager for the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The ABCD Study® is a large, prospective study of child health and development conducted at 21 sites across the U.S. In 2014 Elizabeth returned to DC after living in Beijing for 6 years where she taught psychology to international high school students. Prior to moving to China, Elizabeth was an American Psychological Association Congressional Fellow in the U.S. Senate, taught neuroscience at Georgetown University, and conducted brain research at NIH for about 10 years. She received her Ph.D. in neuropsychology from The George Washington University and her B.A. in psychology and French from Brandeis University. Elizabeth has a passion for communicating science to the public, especially students and educators, and regularly visits DC-area elementary and middle-school classrooms to engage in experiential learning about the brain.
